The Escalator 

Although a vast majority of people view the escalator as an insignificant design, especially in comparison to the elevator, it is actually quite a revolutionary piece of technology. The early elevators safety assurance pales in comparison to that of the early escalator; also the latter changed the architecture of buildings forever, while also blooming into a mainstream mode of timeless indoor mass public transportation.

The above image depicts one of the very first escalators which was used as an amusment ride at New York's Coney Island.
